Biography
Otto Calmeijer Meijburg (they/them) works as a physical theatre maker and performer. Their work is driven by the desire to use art as a strategy for joy, resistance, hope, escape and (political) imagination. Live music and improvisation play an important role in Otto's work. With each new project or collaboration they are exploring different cross-overs between live music, dance and theatre. Otto prefers to work inclusively and most of their projects centre around inclusion in one way or another.
In 2020 Otto co-founded Starlab, together with choreographer and performer Hannah Sampé and mucisian Marius Lambertz. Starlab is a long term artistic empowerment project for people with and without disabilities. Starlab created a stage production in 2021 (Im Rampenlicht, see 'projects'), collaborated with MAISKIND for a project in public space, and organised a performance disco series in the queer space KU: in Cologne. Starlab also offers performance workshops several times a year.
In 2023 Otto joined the artistic core team of Wild, a new theatre collective in Utrecht (NL) that creates stage projects with genderqueer and trans teenagers. Wild's first production WACHT premiered in january 2023 (see 'projects'), and their next production 'The Queer Nature of Everything' (working title) is due to premiere in 2024. Wild is a long term community arts project.
